Before the Storm
- Know your evacuation zone and routes
- Prepare an emergency supply kit (see below)
- Secure important documents in waterproof containers
- Fill your vehicle's gas tank
- Charge all electronic devices
- Review your insurance policies
- Trim trees and secure outdoor furniture
- Stock up on prescription medications
Emergency Supply Kit
- Water: 1 gallon per person per day (3-day minimum)
- Non-perishable food (3-day supply)
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
- Flashlights and extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Whistle to signal for help
- Dust masks, plastic sheeting, and duct tape
- Manual can opener
- Cell phone chargers and backup battery
During the Storm
- Stay indoors and away from windows
- Listen to local authorities and weather updates
- Go to an interior room if winds intensify
- Do not go outside during the eye of the storm
- Keep your emergency kit accessible
- Stay in contact with family members
After the Storm
- Wait for official all-clear before going outside
- Watch for downed power lines and flooding
- Document property damage with photos
- Contact your insurance company
- Check on neighbors, especially elderly
- Boil water until authorities confirm safety
